Highlights from the January 2006 Meeting:
Earth Day 2006 was the primary focus of our discussion at our meeting on the evening of the 16th. Sara Schmidt, director of the Beaver Creek Reserve Citizen Science Center and Jim Phillips, professor of chemistry at UWEC are serving as two of three organizers. Jim and Sara described their primary needs for the overall event, focusing especially on potential speakers, on groups that would be interested in having a table/display at the event, and on possible vendors. NT members asked questions and suggested ways that NT can help. Remember, it was Earth Day 1970 that marked the beginning of the Eau Claire Area Ecology Action: the group that became Northern Thunder: if you have ideas or want to get involved, drop an email to Sara or Jim, or to their third co-organizer, Crispin Pierce, professor of environmental and public health at UWEC.
Others items of interest that were discussed include the potential coal plant at the Tyrone site and the on-going landfill concerns at Seven-Mile and throughout the state.
Next meeting: Monday 6 February, 7:30 p.m. at the WHYS radio station studio offices, 405 S. Farwell. Primary focus for that meeting: Scheduling of meetings and planning of work for the remainder of 2006.
You are welcome to meet with us at our new office space,
