Northern Thunder: Our History

This rough chronology, a work in progress, relies largely on a 1977 paper written by Will Fantle.

Earth Day 1970 ECAEA (Eau Claire Area Ecology Action) forms as part of the statewide response to Gaylord Nelson’s organizing of the first Earth Day celebrations. Over the next six years, this group of students, faculty, and community members are engaged in many projects, including:

  • Chippewa River pollution monitoring
  • Campus/dorm recycling (establishment of programs)
  • Community recycling (establishment of programs)
  • Nuclear Power/the Tyrone Energy Park (resistance)
  • Eco-News (1973, monthly newsletter)
  • Earth Day 1975 ECAEA Celebration includes David Brower
  • Work for bottle bill (1975) which is, sadly, defeated

Discussions about broadening the focus of the group lead to . . .

  • Earth Day 1976, the ECAEA announces they will change their name to Northern Thunder and will broaden the group's focus to include progressive social issues in addition to environmental work.

Over the next several years, however, Wisconsin's environment remains high in the list of priorities for Northern Thunder's work.

  • Ladysmith Mine (Kennecott)
  • Nuclear Power/Tyrone EP work on-going
  • NT sponsors a Minnesota-Wisconsin Activists Conference
  • NT presence at the Seabrook demonstrations
  • Northern Sun Alliance is founded
  • Indian Treaty Rights

  • Upcoming . . . 1977 to the present!
