Earth Day 1970
ECAEA (Eau Claire Area Ecology Action) forms as part of the statewide
response to Gaylord Nelson’s organizing of the first Earth Day celebrations.
Over the next six years, this group of students, faculty, and community members
are engaged in many projects, including:
Chippewa River pollution
monitoring
Campus/dorm recycling
(establishment of programs)
Community recycling (establishment
of programs)
Nuclear Power/the Tyrone
Energy Park (resistance)
Eco-News (1973, monthly
newsletter)
Earth Day 1975 ECAEA Celebration
includes David Brower
Work for bottle
bill (1975) which is, sadly, defeated
Discussions about broadening the focus of the group lead to . .
.
Earth
Day 1976, the ECAEA announces they will change their name to Northern
Thunder and will broaden the group's focus to include progressive social issues
in addition to environmental work.
Over the next several years, however, Wisconsin's environment remains high in
the list of priorities for Northern Thunder's work.
